Making Low Ceiling Look Higher

While a house with high ceilings and large windows is ideal, it's not always true when you try to check out everything else on your dream home list. Low ceilings can make a room feel cramped or smaller, but it doesn't have to feel that way. There are many small (and large) things that can be done to make a low-ceilinged room feel like another.

Paint Vertical Stripes

You may not have the design aesthetic, but if you like the look of the stripes, they can do wonders for a low ceiling. This can be done using wallpaper, or if you're handy, try painting using painter's tape.

Choose Dark Tile

Unless the room is also small, going with the dark floor can actually draw the eye from the low ceiling.

Use Long Curtains

Installing long curtains close to the ceiling and at a high place can create an elongation effect. Even if the windows are small, floor-to-ceiling curtains make the ceilings feel higher and add focus to the room.

Avoid Low Hanging Lights

Hanging lamps are great for high ceilings, but they'll make a low ceiling seem even lower. Try using floor lamps or recessed lights.

Installing High-Level Racks

Even if you don't need such a large shelf, they help dazzle to make the room appear taller.

Keep Furniture Low to the Floor

Large, bulky pieces of furniture can make the room feel smaller. If you want to increase the height of a room visually, lower the larger pieces of furniture to the floor. Low-profile furniture is designed with low ceiling homes in mind and works great in such spaces.
