Preparing Wooden Floors For Polishing

Wooden Floor Covering

No matter how well you know your job, if you do not have the necessary materials, you cannot make a perfect flooring. Here are the tools and tricks used in the application of wood floor polish.

Safety First

• Never work when you are tired, drunk or on heavy medication.
• Pay attention to the lighting and ventilation of the working environment, if possible, do not stay alone in the building.
• Check that the electrical installation of the place you work is sufficient for all your tools to work safely.
• Wear suitable work clothes and shoes. Do not wear loose clothing that can get caught in the machine.
• Be sure to use your mask, safety glasses and earplugs against dust and solvents. Don't age young.
• Extinguish all flaming appliances such as stoves, stoves, etc. when using flammable materials.
• Make sure that the electrical cords of the tools you use are always in good condition.

When Should Stirring and Polishing Processes Be Performed?

After the wooden flooring is placed, it should be waited for 1-3 weeks. Thus, you can correct the defects that occur due to the operation of the flooring with scraper.

Tools Required for Stirring

• Stirring machines
• For wall edges
• For radiator
• Also, don't forget a long-handled broom, vacuum cleaner, nails, hammer, pincers, hand scraper, sandpaper.

Before starting work:

First, remove all the furniture and vacuum the floor thoroughly, fix the playing boards with nails and bury the nail heads that come up on the wooden surface. (Sparking may result in a fire in the dust collection bag when the stirrer is driven over their heads with nails.)

Stirring of Long Wood Veneer (Long Parquet)

Always move parallel to the length of the wood, making two-thirds of the room first. Go all the way to the wall and go back to where you started, then continue pulling the machine 7.5-10 cm to the side. When you've finished two-thirds of the room, turn the machine 180 degrees to make the remaining third. Let the area you first compacted and the area you second compacted kiss 30 to 90 cm. Thus, there will be no trace of sandpaper on the line where you start work. And most importantly, do not let the sanding drum touch the ground when you are not moving the scallop machine forward or backward. If the floor is level, you can start with medium-grit sandpaper.

After the first scrape, trim the edges with the edge machine. Use the sandpaper that you will use for the second sanding process (finer than the first) on the edge machine. (On old polished areas, sandpaper may be required with the same thickness as you used in the first scraper).

Sandpaper thicknesses

• Very coarse 20, 24, 30
• Coarse 36, 40
• Medium 50, 60, 80
• Fine 80, 100, 120
• Very thin 120, 150

The floor must be completely cleaned with the first scraper. The following sanding operations will help to remove the scratches that appeared in the first scraping process.

In general, the scraping process is done using sandpaper in brackets in the following order.

1. Stir (coarse or very coarse)
2. Edge machine (middle)
3. Stir (medium)
4. Edge machine (fine)
5. Stir (fine)

After the scraping process, the surface should be smoothed with an eccentric, slow-speed polishing machine.

For Parquet And Patterned Floors

You can usually start with a stirrer and medium grit sandpaper. In the second round, thin-thickness paper and a scaling machine are sufficient, and in the third round, a polishing machine is sufficient. Stirring direction should be as in the picture.

Stirring of Old Floors

Before starting work, the thickness of the existing coating should be checked. You can measure this by removing the baseboard. Very coarse sandpaper may be required to remove old polish. The most suitable treatment should be selected according to the condition of the floor and the thickness of the existing floor covering. Instead of trying to correct some deep flaws, it would be best to turn a blind eye to them. Remember to bury all nail heads, if any, before starting to scrape old floors.

Polishing Process

Stirring and sanding processes are the most important processes that will reveal the beauty of the wooden floor. One thing to note is that sanding scratches on the wood will show up after the polish has been removed, especially if the floor is to be colored. Therefore, it is very important that there are no scratches on the wooden surface before polishing.

As soon as the scrape and sanding operations are finished, it is necessary to proceed to the work of coloring and polishing the floor. When polishing, the manufacturer's instructions for use must be strictly followed. Depending on the intended use of the floor, care should be taken to apply the correct polish in the required amount, and the polish manufacturer's recommendations should be consulted on the fillers, thinners that can be used and the waiting time between coats.
